When Being Healthful, Being Together Counts
If two is better than one, just imagine what you could do with three, four, or even more. This used to be my theory on doughnuts. Please note the words ‘used to’, as in doughnuts are now considered a special treat that I’ve chosen only to enjoy occasionally.
With swimsuit season coming up I’ve decided to apply the ‘More is Better Than One principle to getting into shape. Don’t worry, I didn’t say I was actually going to wear a swimsuit. I was just pointing out that the change of seasons has turned out to be a good time to change some (bad) habits.
In my quest to exercise and to eat more healthful foods I’ve discovered the power of teamwork. I’ve joined a group at my gym and a few mornings each week we gather together with our drill sergeant, Stacy, to try to get our bodies to more closely match the shapes of everyone else in the gym (Think pears versus carrots; some of them are carrot-colored as well.).
But it doesn’t stop at the gym. Because I not only live at home but also work there, this seems to be the place where I do most of my eating as well. My team at home consists of my wife (carrot), two boys (baby carrots), and myself (large Bartlett pear). Amazingly, when we eat together as a family we tend to not only eat better, but we seem to get along better as well. It helps us feel closer to each other, more connected.
Together Counts is an organization that has discovered the same thing. The web site encourages families to pledge to become more healthy and active together, with the operative word being together. If you go to the site you and your family can take the pledge together, and even see a map of other families and groups across the country who have done the same.
So the moral of the story is to get healthy. Let’s all exercise, eat better, and do it together. Let’s quit eating the donuts and pick up something healthful. I’ll do it if you will. But I probably won’t eat many carrots.
