MY HOME DEPOT SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
BLACK FRIDAY IS FOR WIMPS
It’s not that I don’t enjoy Christmas shopping, I really do. It’s more that I’m a hopeless procrastinator, putting it off until the last possible moment. Some people get their rush from Black Friday. But for me and an always surprisingly large group of others, we enjoy something I call Blind Panic Christmas Eve.
Our ragtag band of hairy men and harried women share a certain camaraderie, a brothers and sisters in arms kind of thing. Yet even while Blind Panic Christmas Eve brings us together, it also pulls us apart. When the shelves are bare it’s kill or be killed.
We don’t have the luxury to comparison shop—we take whatever is left. We don’t thoughtfully wander the aisles looking for just the right gift, we run. If we find something that even remotely fits the description, we grab it. One year my 6-year-old son had asked for a clock radio. I got him a coffee maker; it didn’t play music, but at least it told the time.
THE HOME DEPOT SAVES THE DAY
This year, due to an assignment from The Home Depot, I shopped early—mid-November early. Usually when I shop in November it’s because I’m looking for birthday or anniversary presents that should have been given in July. But this year I was Christmas shopping, an entire month before usual foray.
I grabbed my list and my youngest son, and away we went.
Keep in mind that going to The Home Depot has never been difficult for me. I don’t mind walking through the store because I’ll often find things I need that I hadn’t even realized I needed. But this trip was on a deadline because we had to pick up my older son from basketball practice. I wasn’t stressed, but I did feel a certain sense of urgency.
As soon as we walk through the doors I could see that this was going to be the easiest shopping trip ever. Immediately to the right of the main entrance was a large “gift corral” area filled with the most popular gifts in the store. Price points were from under $5 to over $200 and the assortment was vast. And they were all together in one convenient area.
Prices were clearly marked and items were easy to find. Within minutes we had found every item on my list and, of course, even a few things that weren’t.
First up was the Ryobi 18-Volt Lithium Ion Drill Kit and Impact Driver Combo Kit for Uncle Larry (all names have been changed to maintain the suspense of guessing what you’re getting for Christmas). Larry is always helping me with projects around my house, so I figured it was about time he got some equipment that worked.
Next was the Dremel Multi-Max Oscillating Tool Kit for my brother Jason. He’s becoming a father for the first time in the next few weeks, and I figured this would be perfect for the many doll houses and Pinewood Derby projects he’ll be undertaking in the coming years.
The last item on my list was the Husky Combo Wrench Set (28 Piece). This one is for my good friend Mark, a man who has everything except a proper wrench set (probably because he lent it to me and hasn’t ever received it back).
It was as easy as that. In less than 30 minutes I had tackled a major portion of my Christmas shopping. Just a couple more stops and I’ll have the entire list complete. This year instead of shopping, I guess I’ll have to find something else to do for Christmas Eve.

Hey well done on being so organised this year! I love going to Home Depot when we’re over visiting my wife’s family in Canada (we live in Ireland) – we don’t really have anything of comparable size with the same wide choice here. To toot my own horn slightly, we’re finished our Christmas shopping too – all done online – I really can’t be assed jostling with the hordes this year!
What about your sister-in-law’s gift?!?! The one who was, in fact, at The Home Depot when it opened on Black Friday. Let me tell you, they treat their early am customers on Black Friday right . . . hot chocolate, coffee, danishes,& muffins. But back to the gifts . . .lets be honest, that brother having the baby will not be making much or fixing much. Instead, you should consider the brother with a house full of girls. After all, he needs tools to feel more manly 😉
I LOVE those carts! My son would have a blast riding around Home Depot in one of those. Although, he’d also never want to leave. haha
