My Awesome Wholesome Backyard Party
It is a truth universally acknowledged that good times must include good company and good food. The times are even better when they’re outside on a summer evening, paid for by someone else, and include a charitable donation to a worthy cause. The Awesome Wholesome Backyard Party I hosted recently for Ovaltine met all of those definitions, and as such, qualified for a “very good time.”
First of all, the food served at any party the Moessers host cannot help but be called “good food,” as long as my husband Bruce cooks it. He was in charge of the main course, the brisket, smoked and slow-cooked in his secret-recipe rub overnight. I served up the other required fixins’ of a summer get-together: baked beans, my homemade potato salad, and fresh fruit with an Ovaltine/cream cheese dip. Dessert was No-Bake Ovaltine cookies, made with sweetened condensed milk, so that they were more like candy than cookies. Everyone had multiple servings of everything, until we were all stuffed to the gills, sitting around like fat fish. Oh, but it was good food, and worth feeling like a “fat fish” for a while.
But Ovaltine didn’t stop there in providing the makings of a backyard party. There were jump ropes, beach balls, Velcro ball sets, swirly straws, and even straws in old-fashioned glass straw dispensers. These were enjoyed particularly by our two young boys, as they played with their Grandpa Dex, who, even at 74, is still very spry. And, of course, there was plenty of Ovaltine on tap, of the new, re-formulated kind. They have three new kinds they’re previewing through the party we hosted and others across the country: Rich Chocolate, Classic Malt, and Chocolate Malt. Each new recipe contains 12 vitamins and minerals, no artificial flavors, and colors made from natural sources. To most of our guests already familiar with Ovaltine, these things were just bonuses on top of the good taste.
The icing on the cake, so to speak, is the $250 donation Ovaltine will make on behalf of our party to Camp Kostopulos, a residential summer camp for kids and adults with disabilities located near Salt Lake City, Utah. Through this organization, these great people can make friendships, fish, ride horses, do the rope course, sing songs, and arts and crafts.
Altogether, it was a great time. I encourage you to try out the Ovaltine fruit dip, the No-Bake Ovaltine cookies, or other recipes that include Ovaltine. Make some “good times” of your own!
